Weird Bookmarks

Over the past decades of browsing and buying used books, I'd found many interesting stuff used as bookmarks inside those books.

They are brochures; envelops; airline, bus, and train tickets; lottery tickets; Christmas cards; name cards; postcards; photographs; sales receipts; used postage stamps; and bookmarks (of course) among several others.

I have heard of absent-minded readers who'd conveniently used banknotes as bookmarks but, being a keen paper money collector myself, I don't have any luck yet in finding one so far.

You can never know some of those weird but interesting stuff readers tucked into their books as bookmarks. Have you ever heard of the story about someone who'd found a piece of ham bacon left behind as a bookmark?

1993 Brochures from Hungary

In 1993, a friend from Hungary had air-mailed to me a package of colorful brochures and magazines.

They're written in English and their information was useful about Hungary, and I've kept them well ever since on my bookshelf.

1980 Brochure of Crossbows

This 16-page color brochure entitled Barnett Crossbows and Sporting Goods, together with a nice cover letter, a 4-page price list, and an order form were air-mailed to me in 1980 from a UK exporter of crossbow and archery equipment.

The high price had discouraged me from buying any of those sporting equipment and I'd thought I might as well simply stick to my cheaper game of throwing darts.

Annual Reports from Australia

In August of 1995, I wrote to Ashton Mining Limited and Plutonic Resources Limited of Australia and requested for their latest annual reports.

Both companies were prompt in posting their 1994 annual reports by airmail to me within 10 days.

Ashton mined diamonds and Plutonic mined gold. I am fascinated by these two minerals ever since I was young.

National Geographic magazines

I'd started buying old issues of National Geographic magazines from Romie back in the early 1990s when he was then running Sultana Bookstore at Selegie Road.

I recall these five issues were among the very first issues that I'd bought 'coz they have great articles like Gold, The Eternal Treasure; Diamond, The Incredible Crystal; Silver: A Mineral of Excellent Nature; Treasure from the Ghost Galleon (featuring Mel Fisher); The Miracle Metal: Platinum.

Back in the early 1990s, Romie had a huge stock of old National Geographic magazines, and in the following few years I'd bought from him many more issues of these magazines.

Credit Suisse™ 1988 MONETARIUM Coin Sales Catalog

Credit Suisse™, MONETARIUM No.49, Zurich: Swiss Credit Bank Numismatic Department, Summer 1988, pp125, inc 48 pages of coin photos.

This is a quarterly coin sales catalog written in German and French. I'd once subscribed to this series of catalogs for a few years but dumped all the catalogs away, saved for this No.49 issue. That interesting front cover of this issue makes it a collector's item.

Bookmarks from my friend, Romie

12 nice and neat bookmarks given to me by my friend, Romie, who runs a bookshop called Books Galore at Scotts Road.

I've been collecting bookmarks since my early school days and I'd found some nice bookmarks (among other interesting items that I'll show you later) tucked inside some of the many used books bought from Romie, as well as inside several other used books I'd bought from other bookshops.

In all these 15 years that I've been buying used books and magazines from Romie, not even once have I ever asked him for any bookmark that he might have come across from sorting his thousands and thousands of books and magazines. Not until sometime last month, that idea somehow came into my mind when I was drinking coffee with him in his bookshop.

Romie then run through his two drawers of his desk and handed over to me these 12 pieces of nice and neat bookmarks. He told me he'd thrown away several bookmarks throughout those years, and he'll save for me any that he can find from now on.

Expedition Whydah, read by Barry Clifford

Barry Clifford with Paul Perry, Expedition Whydah: The Story of the World's First Excavation of a Pirate Treasure Ship and the Man Who Found Her, New York: Harper Audio, 1999, Audiobook, 2 cassettes, 3 hours.

This audiobook, read by Barry Clifford, was bought from a large bookstore at Orchard Road in 2002. It serves as a complement to the hardback of the same title that I'd bought from Romie in the same year. Nowadays, Romie sells a few used audiobooks in cassettes and audio CDs.

In the early 1990s, I'd bought several audiobooks in the form of cassettes and they're still very playable and their sound quality hasn't deteriorated much. It's fun listening to them once in a while.
